Top cooktop picks to make mealtime easier

Just like in a range, you’ll find gas, electric and induction models of cooktops.

Gas cooktops use a gas flame to heat cookware. Electric cooktops cook food by heating coils beneath a smooth surface to then heat your cookware.

Induction cooktops use a copper coil below the glass to generate electromagnetic energy. This energy is directly transmitted to the cooking pot or pan above for instant heat.

The standard size for cooktops is 30 inches side. You’ll find some models at 36” wide and others at 24”.

Electric cooktops are safer than gas cooktops as there is no open flame to cause a fire hazard. However, gas cooktops provide instant heat and precise control, making them ideal for high-heat cooking techniques.

Induction cooktops give the best of both worlds as heat is only generated into the cookware you’re using so there is much less dissipated heat. As well, induction cooktops provide instant control and high heat.

Yes. Most gas cooktops are convertible to propane. Ensure you’re using the correct conversion kit and a licensed gas technician to perform the conversion.

Most cookware produced in the last 10 years will be induction compatible. Aluminum and glass are examples of materials that aren’t induction compatible.  Most manufacturers will put icons on the bottom of the pan to tell you whether it’s induction compatible or not. If not, you can do a simple test to determine whether it’s induction compatible. Place a magnet on the bottom of your pan. If it holds, it is induction compatible.

Most cooktops allow this type of installation but it’s very important that you consult the installation guide for both appliances to ensure the correct spacing is there. Not all cooktops can be combined with all wall ovens.
