Although the dimensions are similar, there’s no "standard" washer and dryer size. That’s why it’s critical to measure your space carefully and thoroughly. Do it once. Then do it again.
Standard Side-by-Side Pairs
For standard pairs, you'll need a space about 40" high x 56" wide x 31–34" deep. You can also add a pedestal to front load washers and dryers to load and unload without bending down, which can increase height by about 15 inches.
Stacked Pairs and Laundry Centers
Many front load washers and dryers can be stacked, a good option when you have more vertical than horizontal space. For full-size stackable washer and dryers, you'll typically need a space that's 80" high x 28" wide x 31-34" deep. You may also consider a stacked laundry center at 74-76" high x 24-28" wide x 27-33" deep.
Small Space Pairs
Whether you stack your small space washer and dryer or put them side-by-side, they're designed to fit into closets, apartments, and small homes. For side-by-side small space pairs, you'll need a space that's about 34" high x 48" wide x 24-25" deep, while for stacked pairs you'll need approximately 68" high x 24" wide x 24-25" deep.
In order to fit and function properly, your washer and dryer need a little breathing room in the front, back, and each side.
IN FRONT OF THE PAIR
Add approximately 4 feet for easy loading/ unloading. In a closet set up, ensure the unit doors clear the closet doorway.
BEHIND THE PAIR
Add approximately 6 inches for hoses and venting space for traditional vented dryers.
BESIDE THE PAIR
Add 1 inch of space on the sides of the units: top, sides, and between the pair to minimize noise.
ABOVE THE WASHER
Add extra space for easy opening & closing for top load units.
All our front load washers doors will always be hinged on the left and cannot be changed. Dryer doors that swing doors can be reversed.
Simply check the hookups in the laundry room. If there is a 120-volt electrical outlet (this is what every standard outlet looks like in a home) and a capped-off gas line nearby, they are set up for a gas dryer. If there is a 240-volt electrical outlet, which is larger than a standard outlet and contains three or four holes, then they are set up for electric.
As a rule, 12 pounds of laundry is appropriate for a standard capacity top load washer, 15 to 18 pounds for a front-load washer. If using the wash & dry cycle, customers should only be using a 2-lb load of lightweight fabrics per load.
Yes. Both Whirlpool and Maytag have top and front load washers and dryers that can be connected. Customers would gain insights into if they cycle if complete, detergent needs to be added, and even download additional cycles that aren’t available on the physical machine.
No. Pedestals that offer storage and elevate the laundry off the floor are only compatible with front load laundry.
For best performance, customers should use the Clean Washer cycle with Affresh once a month. This cycle and product work together to remove any build-up of undissolved detergent. Customers should clean their lint filter after every dryer cycle to make sure the airflow is performing at peak CFM.
Additional, specific laundry pairs will require other maintenance such as emptying a washer filter in our Maytag Pet Pro top load washer and our Whirlpool stacked laundry center. Heat pump dryers also require maintenance for proper life expectancy.
No. When a new laundry pair is purchased, Whirlpool recommends also purchasing a new set of washer hoses as well. If you are buying a steam dryer, a Y-connector is also required and there is a dedicated hose kit for these laundry units.
The job of the agitator is to push clothes down into the bottom 1/3 of the wash tub—the "Wash Zone"—where the cleaning action happens. Here clothes gently rub against each other to remove and rinse away loose soils and have extra motion due to the agitator movement. Clothing fibre opens up with the wash action allowing the detergent to remove dirt, as clothes get pushed up the sides of the wash basket then pushed into the Wash Zone with help from the veins/fins on the agitator.
Washers with impellers use a smaller amount of water in order to optimize the friction of the clothes rubbing against each other to deliver a gentle but thorough clean. The low-profile design of the impeller is designed so laundry has more room to move. Plus, they leave more room in the wash basket for bulky articles and makes loading and unloading easy. Impellers employ a low-water wash to save on water and provide a concentrated clean; more water can dilute the detergent and render it less effective.
All newer washers require high efficiency or HE detergent. It is a higher concentrated detergent that is designed to work with a low water wash system. Whirlpool makes their own HE detergent, SWASH that is available to order and designed to help you not overpoor detergent which is bad for clothing, skin, and life expectancy of washers.
